Costs & Quotes
How much does tree removal cost in Flint and Genesee County?
Honest 2026 ranges: small trees under 30 feet run $300–$700, medium trees 30–60 feet run $700–$1,500, and large mature maples, oaks, or cottonwoods run $1,500–$3,500+. Crane-assist jobs run $2,500–$6,000+. The drivers are size, species condition (dead ash cost more than live trees of the same size), access, and what's within falling distance. Every job gets a firm flat quote after a free on-site look — see the full pricing guide.
Is the quote really free? What's the catch?
No catch. On-site quotes are free and good for 30 days. We make money doing tree work, not quoting it — and a firm flat number protects both of us. We ask only that you're reasonably serious; if you're collecting quotes for a job years away, say so and we'll still help.
Why did my neighbor's tree cost half what I was quoted?
Almost always one of four things: their tree was smaller or a healthier species, it had open space to fall into, their access was easier, or the quote was verbal and mushroomed once work started. Dead ash near a garage, in a tight city lot, with a fence to protect, is a different job than a live pine in an open yard — even at the same height.
Do you offer payment plans or financing?
For larger jobs we can split payment across milestones, and we're flexible for estate and land-bank situations where paperwork moves slowly. Ask when you get the quote — we'd rather structure something honest than lose the work to a shady operator.
The Emerald Ash Borer
How do I know if my ash tree has EAB?
Classic signs: canopy thinning that starts at the top and works down, D-shaped exit holes about 1/8 inch across in the bark, vertical bark splits, and shoots sprouting from the trunk as the tree tries to survive. Woodpecker activity concentrated on one trunk is another clue. A photo through the quote form gets you a first read; confirmation on site takes minutes.
How urgent is a dead or dying ash, really?
Genuinely urgent if it's near your house, garage, driveway, the street, or anywhere people gather. Ash killed by EAB dry out and turn brittle within a season or two, and arborists consider standing dead ash among the most unpredictable trees to work on or stand under. "Widow-maker" is the trade's term, and it isn't marketing. Treat a dead ash like a leaning chimney: a this-season fix, not a someday one.
Can my ash be saved with treatment instead?
Sometimes. If the canopy is still mostly full — roughly 70% or more — professional trunk injection with emamectin benzoate every 2–3 years can protect a valued ash for years. Past about half-canopy decline, removal is usually the honest answer. We'd rather refer you to a treatment option than sell you a removal a specialist could have prevented.
Is EAB-affected ash wood dangerous to burn or handle?
No. The beetle only harms ash trees, not people or pets. Seasoned ash is decent, easy-splitting firewood. The one caution: moving untreated ash firewood long distances helped spread EAB across Michigan — so keep it local, which for Genesee County jobs it naturally is.
Permits, Lines & Rules
Do I need a permit to remove a tree on my own property?
Generally no, for trees on private property in Flint and surrounding Genesee County communities. The exception is the right-of-way strip between sidewalk and street: those trees usually belong to the municipality, and cutting one without approval can bring fines. Not sure where the line falls? We'll help you figure it out before any cutting.
What about trees near power lines?
Anything tangled in utility lines gets coordinated with the utility first — for most of Flint and Genesee County that's Consumers Energy. We never cut near energized lines, and neither should anyone without utility authorization. If a limb is simply near a service drop, we plan the rigging around it and keep required clearances.
My neighbor's tree hangs over my yard. Can I make them remove it?
Michigan's general rule: you may trim branches back to the property line (at your expense), but you can't force removal of a healthy tree, and you can't trespass onto their property to do it. If the tree is actually dead, dying, or visibly hazardous, document it and notify your neighbor in writing — that's when responsibility shifts. Boundary trees (trunk straddling the line) are co-owned and need both owners' agreement. When in doubt, our assessment documents what we see.
I own a vacant lot with problem trees. What do I check first?
Ownership, before anything else. Parcels with tax-foreclosure or land-bank history in Genesee County can have complicated title — check the county register of deeds and the Genesee County Land Bank if the lot was ever tax-foreclosed. Cutting trees on land you don't actually own yet creates problems for everyone. Once title is clear, we walk the lot and quote — selectively clearing hazards and invasives while keeping healthy keepers is usually the right play.
Working With Us
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes — general liability and workers' compensation. You'll get the certificate of insurance with every quote, before work starts. Tree work is among the most dangerous trades in America; an uninsured crew on your property is a risk you don't want to carry.
How fast can you actually get here?
From our Flint base: same-day to next-day for assessments in Flint, Burton, and Grand Blanc; a day or two for Davison, Flushing, and Swartz Creek. Scheduled work usually lands within the week or two depending on season — late-winter pruning books out fastest. Emergencies (tree on structure, blocked egress) jump every queue: call (810) 555-0110 and a human answers, day or night.
What happens to the wood, branches, and stump?
Standard pricing includes chipping all brush and hauling it off, and the trunk is dealt with per your quote — bucked into firewood rounds if you want them (free wood, ~12 months seasoning), or removed. Stumps are separate: grinding is quoted by diameter and is cheapest when bundled with the removal. You keep the wood chips as mulch if you'd like — they beat bagged mulch for paths and beds.
Do you work in winter?
Yes — winter is prime time for much of this work. Frozen ground protects turf, trees are dormant (and oaks can be pruned safely), and you're ahead of storm season. We pause for genuinely dangerous weather, but Michigan winters are working weather for tree crews.
Will my homeowner's insurance cover tree removal?
If a tree hit a covered structure (house, garage, fence), removal of that tree from the structure is usually covered, subject to your policy limits and deductible — that's why we document everything with photos and written scope. Removal of a standing hazardous tree generally isn't covered, unfortunately, even when it's obviously dangerous. We provide the paperwork either way; call your agent early for storm events.
